Do I need a boxspring or foundation for my mattress?
Understanding whether you need a boxspring or foundation for your mattress is crucial. Often, these terms are used interchangeably, with modern boxsprings essentially acting as foundations without actual springs. The necessity of a boxspring or foundation depends largely on your bed frame.
For Traditional Bed Frames: If your bed frame has fewer than 10 slats or crossbars, a boxspring or foundation is necessary. It provides a level, stable surface, ensuring your mattress is properly supported. This helps in maintaining the mattress's structure and can extend its lifespan.
For Platform Beds: Many contemporary bed frames are designed as platform frames. These usually include 11 or more slats or a solid steel grid, eliminating the need for a separate foundation. Platform beds offer sufficient support for your mattress on their own.
Adjustable Bases: The rising popularity of adjustable bases, which can raise and lower your head and feet, has also influenced mattress support. These bases are self-supporting and designed to offer optimal mattress support without needing an additional foundation.
Importance of Proper Support: Regardless of your bed type, ensuring your mattress rests on a solid, level surface is vital. This not only helps in keeping your spine properly aligned but also enhances the overall comfort and durability of your mattress.
Further Guidance: For more information on choosing the right foundation for your mattress and insights into various bed types, you can explore our detailed Mattress Buying Guide. A twin measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long, perfect for kids or small spaces. A twin XL, at 38 by 80 inches, adds extra length for taller sleepers. A full, sized at 54 by 75 inches, works well for single adults but is narrower than a queen, which is 60 by 80 inches and ideal for couples or spacious solo sleeping. A king, at 76 by 80 inches, offers more width than a queen, great for families or those wanting extra room. A California king, measuring 72 by 84 inches, is longer but slightly narrower than a king, suited for taller people or larger bedrooms. Not sure which fits your space? Returns & Exchanges
What is your 100-Night Comfort Guarantee?
We want you to love your mattress. That's why we offer a risk-free 100-Night Comfort Guarantee. We ask that you sleep on your new mattress for at least 21 nights to allow your body to adjust. If you're still not comfortable between day 21 and day 100, you can exchange it for a different model.
To be eligible, you must purchase one of our qualifying mattress protectors with your mattress to keep it in brand-new condition. The only cost is a small delivery fee for the exchange. You can read the full details on our Trial Policy page.
What if I need to return my purchase right away?
You can return any product within 3 days of receipt for a full refund, provided it is still in its original, factory-sealed packaging. This is for items that are unopened and unused. For more details, see our Return Policy.
Are there any restocking or return shipping fees?
For our 100-Night Comfort Guarantee, there are no restocking fees. You are only responsible for the delivery fee to facilitate the pickup of the old mattress and delivery of your new one. We do not allow customers to transport exchange mattresses themselves to ensure they remain in good condition.
What happens to returned mattresses?
Mattresses that have been exchanged through our comfort guarantee are thoroughly inspected, sanitized, and sold at a significant discount in our "AS-IS" clearance section, so they never go to a landfill.
Mattresses
How long does a mattress last—and when should I replace mine?
Most mattresses last 7–10 years depending on materials, use, and care. Replace sooner if you notice sagging, pressure-point pain, or significant wear.
Should I flip or rotate my mattress?
You'll be happy to know that all Mattress King mattresses are designed to be one-sided, so you never have to go through the heavy work of flipping them.
However, we do highly recommend rotating your mattress to ensure it wears evenly and maintains its comfortable feel for years to come. Here’s the ideal schedule:
For the first 6 months: Rotate it 180° (head-to-toe) once a month.
After the first 6 months: Rotate it just once every 3 months.
This simple step is the best way to extend the life and comfort of your new mattress.
What's the difference between plush, pillow top, and euro top?
These terms all describe the softness and top comfort layer of a mattress.
Plush: A plush mattress has extra padding and quilting stitched into the top surface for a soft, cloud-like feel.
Pillow Top: This feels even softer. It's like having a separate, fluffy pillow sewn directly onto the top of the mattress, giving it a distinct layered look and extra cushioning.
Euro Top: Similar to a pillow top, but the extra layer of padding is stitched flush with the edges of the mattress. This creates a more uniform, streamlined look and provides a slightly denser, more supportive feel than a traditional pillow top.
How do I choose the right mattress for my sleep style?
Finding the right mattress depends on your primary sleeping position and personal preference.
Side Sleepers: Often need a softer to medium mattress (plush or medium-plush) to cushion the shoulders and hips and keep the spine aligned.
Back Sleepers: Typically do best with a medium to firm mattress that provides support for the lower back without letting the hips sink too far.
Stomach Sleepers: Usually require a firm or extra-firm mattress to prevent the spine from arching uncomfortably.
Our in-store sleep experts are professionally trained to help you find the perfect match!
What are the standard mattress dimensions?
Here are the typical mattress sizes in inches:
Twin: 38" x 75"
Twin XL: 38" x 80"
Full: 54" x 75"
Queen: 60" x 80"
King: 76" x 80"
California King: 72" x 84"
What is a hybrid mattress?
A hybrid mattress combines the best of both worlds: the support of a traditional innerspring coil system with the comfort and pressure relief of foam layers (like memory foam or latex) on top. This design provides a great balance of support, responsiveness, and body-contouring comfort.
Do your mattresses have a chemical smell ("off-gassing")?
No. We work with manufacturers who use high-quality materials. Any slight "new mattress" scent that may exist dissipates very quickly. The foams used in our mattresses are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they are made without harmful chemicals like ozone depleters, formaldehyde, mercury, lead, and have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for better indoor air quality.
Can I use any bed frame or foundation?
Yes, as long as it's supportive! Modern mattresses need a solid, flat surface. This can be a platform bed, an adjustable base, or a foundation/box spring on a frame with proper center support. Using an old, sagging box spring or a frame without a center support leg can damage your new mattress and void its warranty.
How much do your mattresses cost?
We have a mattress for every budget, with prices ranging from around $200 for a twin up to $4,500+ for a premium king set. We believe a quality mattress is an investment in your health, and our team is dedicated to finding you the absolute best value for your money.
Split King vs. Split-Head King—what’s the difference?
Split King = two Twin XL mattresses side-by-side (fully split top-to-bottom).
Split-Head King = one mattress split only at the top for independent head movement on an adjustable base; requires compatible sheets.
What is the difference between a regular-profile and low-profile box spring?
The main difference is simply the height. At Mattress King, our regular-profile foundation is 9 inches tall, while our low-profile foundation is 4.5 inches tall.
It's important to know that both options provide the exact same sturdy and reliable support for your mattress. You don't sacrifice any durability by choosing the lower option; the choice is purely about achieving your ideal bed height.
So, why choose one over the other?
You might choose a low-profile (4.5") foundation if you have a very thick pillow-top mattress and want to keep your total bed height at a comfortable level that's easy to get in and out of. It can also create a more modern, sleek look.
You might choose a regular (9") foundation if you have a thinner mattress or simply prefer the classic look of a bed that sits higher off the floor.
Ultimately, it’s a personal preference that allows you to customize the final height and look of your bed without compromising on support.
How does your mattress firmness scale work?
To make shopping as simple as possible, we rate every mattress on a 1-to-10 scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the absolute firmest. You'll find this rating in the title of every mattress on our website and on the tags in our stores.
After helping Oklahomans sleep better for over 20 years, we've refined our scale into six distinct categories to help you easily find your perfect feel:
Plush (1-3): Exceptionally soft and cloud-like. Perfect for side sleepers who need maximum pressure relief for shoulders and hips.
Medium-Plush (3-4): A soft, cushioning top layer with a more supportive core underneath. A popular choice for side sleepers who still want a substantial feel.
Medium (4-6): A balanced, "not-too-soft, not-too-firm" feel that appeals to a wide variety of sleepers. Great for couples with different preferences.
Medium-Firm (6-8): This is our most popular category. It provides robust, noticeable support while still having enough surface cushioning to relieve pressure points. Ideal for back sleepers and anyone seeking extra support.
Firm (8-9): A very sturdy sleep surface with minimal sink-in. Excellent for stomach sleepers and those who prefer to sleep "on top" of their mattress.
Extra Firm (9-10): The most rigid and supportive feel available, offering a solid, flat surface.
What's the best mattress?
That's the big question! The honest answer is that the "best" mattress is different for everyone—it truly depends on your body type, preferred sleeping position, and comfort preferences.
That said, when customers ask us for a recommendation, we define "best" by looking at our data: which mattress is most popular with our fellow Oklahomans and has the lowest rate of exchanges under our 100-Night Comfort Guarantee.
Year after year, one mattress consistently comes out on top for customer satisfaction: the Presidential 14” Cooling Plush Hybrid. Its combination of pressure-relieving foam and supportive coils, along with its cooling features, hits a sweet spot for comfort and support that a wide range of people love.
How do you compare to other mattress brands?
Our goal is to give Oklahomans a better way to buy a mattress by combining the best of local retail and online shopping. Here’s how we’re different:
You Get the Best of Both Worlds: Unlike online-only brands, you can actually visit our stores to test a mattress before you buy, guided by a sleep expert. But just like them, you’re still protected by our risk-free 100-Night Comfort Guarantee, so you can be sure you love your choice.
True Local Value and Service: As an Oklahoma company since 2005, our reputation with our neighbors is everything. We aren't a national chain with high-pressure tactics. We focus on curating a selection of mattresses that offer the absolute best value, and we back it up with our own in-house, fast 1-day delivery team—not a third-party service.
Expertise You Can Trust: Mattresses are all we do. Our team members are highly trained sleep experts dedicated to helping you find the right mattress for your specific needs, not just selling you the most expensive box.
In short, we offer the try-before-you-buy confidence and expert advice of a specialty local store, but with the competitive value and modern policies of an online brand.
Adjustable Beds
My adjustable base stopped working. What should I do?
Don't worry, it's usually a simple fix! Try these quick troubleshooting steps:
Check the Power: Make sure the base is plugged into a working outlet and all cord connections are secure.
Replace Remote Batteries: The remote may light up but lack the power to send a signal. Fresh batteries often solve the problem.
Re-Sync the Remote: If the first two steps don't work, you may need to re-sync the remote to the base. You can watch this quick tutorial video: How to Sync Your Remote.
If you're still having trouble, please call the customer service number on the back of your remote for expert assistance.
Do I need a surge protector for my adjustable base?
Yes, absolutely! An adjustable base has sensitive electronic components. A surge protector is a small, inexpensive investment that protects your base from power surges and electrical storms, which are not covered by the warranty.
Can any mattress be used on an adjustable base?
Most modern mattresses are compatible, including all memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses. Most individually pocketed coil mattresses also work perfectly. Traditional, interconnected-coil innerspring mattresses are generally not flexible enough and should not be used. All mattresses sold at Mattress King are compatible with adjustable bases.
Will an adjustable base fit inside my existing bed frame?
Yes, in most cases. Our adjustable bases are designed as "zero clearance" and can sit directly inside a standard decorative bed frame (with a headboard, footboard, and rails). You would simply remove the slats that previously supported your box spring.
Mattress Care & Warranty
How often should I rotate my mattress?
All of our mattresses are one-sided, so you never have to flip them. To ensure even wear, we recommend rotating it 180 degrees (head-to-toe) once a month for the first six months, and then once every three months after that.
Should I use a waterproof mattress protector?
Yes, we strongly recommend it. A waterproof protector is the single best way to protect your investment. It guards against spills, sweat, allergens, and dust mites. Most importantly, stains will void your mattress warranty, so a protector is essential for keeping it valid. Check out our high-quality, breathable mattress protectors here.
What should I do if my mattress starts to sag?
First, check what's underneath it! Sagging is most often caused by an unsupportive foundation or bed frame. Ensure your frame has a sturdy center support leg touching the floor. If the support system is solid and you still believe there's an issue with the mattress, you may have a warranty claim.
How do I file a warranty claim?
We make it easy! Simply visit our Product Warranty Page. There, you can review the warranty terms and fill out a simple online claim form right from your phone, including uploading the required photos.
Box Springs, Foundations & Frames
Foundation vs. box spring—what’s the difference?
That's a great question that we hear a lot! The main difference is that a traditional box spring has actual metal springs inside, while a modern foundation is a sturdy, spring-free support base.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
The Traditional Box Spring (The Past): Years ago, mattresses were thinner and often double-sided. They needed a box spring underneath to act as a shock absorber and provide support. It was literally a box filled with springs, which is where the name came from.
The Modern Foundation (The Present): Today’s mattresses are much more advanced. Hybrids, memory foams, and mattresses with pocketed coils have their complex support systems built right in. They are engineered to perform best on a solid, non-flexible surface. A modern foundation—which is a durable wooden frame with slats, covered in fabric—provides that flat, rigid support. Using an old, springy box spring can actually cause a new mattress to sag and can void its warranty.
You'll often hear people, including us, still use the term "box spring" out of habit. When you hear that today, we are referring to a modern, spring-free foundation. The key takeaway is that for any new mattress you purchase, a foundation is the proper choice to ensure you get the best comfort and longevity.
What is a bunkie board?
Think of a bunkie board as a thin, rigid platform for your mattress. It’s a sturdy panel, typically about 1.5 inches thick, that's wrapped in a non-skid fabric to keep your mattress from sliding.
It has two main purposes:
To Add Solid Support: It's the perfect solution for bed frames with slats. If the slats on your platform bed are too far apart (generally more than 3 inches), a bunkie board provides the solid, consistent base that modern mattresses need to prevent sagging and ensure proper support.
To Lower Your Bed's Height: If you have a very thick mattress or simply prefer a modern, low-profile look, you can use a bunkie board instead of a taller 4.5" or 9" foundation to keep your bed closer to the ground.
And where does the name come from? They were originally designed for bunk beds, where a thin but strong support is needed without adding the height of a traditional foundation.
Can I use my existing foundation with a new mattress?
It's possible, but we advise you to be very careful, as the support system is the most critical factor for the comfort and lifespan of your new mattress. An old or inadequate foundation can ruin a new mattress and void its warranty.
Before you decide, inspect your current foundation using this checklist:
Is it a modern foundation? It needs to be a rigid, non-spring foundation, not an old, traditional box spring that has springs inside and flexes under pressure.
Is it perfectly flat and level? Lay a broomstick or yardstick across the surface. There should be no visible dips, valleys, or sagging.
Is it completely solid? Press down firmly in several places. The foundation should be silent and show no signs of cracking, creaking, or bowing.
Does it have proper center support? For any Queen or King size, the bed frame it rests on must have a rigid center support leg that touches the floor.
If your foundation fails any of these tests, you must replace it.
The Bottom Line: A brand-new mattress will conform to whatever surface you put it on. If your old foundation is sagging or uneven, your new mattress will sag right along with it, leading to poor sleep and irreversible damage. To protect your investment and ensure your comfort for years to come, we strongly recommend purchasing a new foundation with your new mattress.
What foundation height should I choose?
The great news is that you can't go wrong when it comes to support! Both our 9-inch regular-profile and 4.5-inch low-profile foundations provide the exact same solid, durable base for your mattress.
The decision comes down to one simple thing: what you want the final height of your bed to be.
Here's a quick guide to help you choose:
Choose the 4.5" low-profile foundation if: You have a thicker mattress (13+ inches) and want an easy-to-access height, or if you simply prefer a more modern, lower-to-the-ground look.
Choose the 9" regular-profile foundation if: You have a standard-height mattress or you prefer the traditional look and feel of a taller bed that's higher off the floor.
Quick Tip to Decide: Grab a tape measure! Find the height of your new mattress on its product page or in-store tag. Stand next to your bed frame and measure from the floor up to see where the top of the mattress would be with each foundation (Mattress Height + 4.5" vs. Mattress Height + 9"). This is the easiest way to visualize which height you'll be most comfortable with.
Do you sell split queen foundations?
Yes, we do! A split queen foundation is the perfect solution for homes with tight spaces.
What is it?
It’s a standard queen foundation that is built in two separate halves. Each half measures approximately 30 inches wide by 80 inches long.
Why would I need one?
A regular one-piece queen foundation is a large, rigid rectangle (60" x 80") that can be very difficult—or even impossible—to maneuver through narrow staircases, tight corners, or older doorways. By splitting the foundation into two manageable pieces, we can easily deliver it to almost any room.
Once the two pieces are in place on your bed frame, they sit side-by-side to create the same solid, supportive base as a one-piece foundation. Your queen mattress rests on top, and you will never feel a difference in comfort or support.
Do I need center support on my frame?
Yes, absolutely. Proper center support is one of the most critical factors in protecting your mattress and ensuring its long-term comfort and durability.
Here are the requirements:
Queen, King, & California King: A center support rail with at least one leg touching the floor is always required.
Full (Double): It is highly recommended for all full beds, and required if the bed is used by any adult (150+ lbs) or by a couple.
Why is it so important?
Without a center support leg, the weight of the mattress and sleepers will cause the frame and foundation to bow downwards in the middle over time. This creates a sag that leads to uncomfortable sleep and permanently damages your mattress.
Most importantly, failure to use a bed frame with adequate center support will void your mattress warranty. This is a standard policy from every mattress manufacturer. Ensuring your frame has proper support is the best way to protect your investment.
Do your metal frames have wheels?
No, our metal bed frames do not have wheels. We exclusively use sturdy glides, and here’s why.
Glides are wide, flat feet that create a solid, stable connection with your floor. We've found this design is far superior to wheels for a few key reasons:
Superior Stability: Glides prevent your bed from shifting, rolling, or drifting away from the wall, a common annoyance with wheels, especially on hard surface floors.
Long-Term Durability: In our experience, wheels are a frequent point of failure on a bed frame; they can break, lock up, or become noisy. Glides are a simpler, stronger solution built to last.
Better for Your Floors: The wide, flat surface of a glide helps distribute the weight of your bed more evenly, reducing the risk of damage to your carpet or flooring.
Ultimately, we choose glides because they create a quieter, stronger, and more reliable base for your mattress.

What does thread count really mean, and what about your sheets?
Traditionally, thread count is a term used for woven cotton sheets. It measures the total number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. For a long time, a higher thread count was seen as the main indicator of higher quality.
However, with today’s advanced fabrics, focusing only on thread count can be misleading. The quality of the fiber and the feel of the material are now far more important—and for many modern sheets, thread count doesn’t even apply!
Instead of focusing on an old-fashioned number, we've selected our sheets based on what truly matters for a great night's sleep in Oklahoma: superior feel, breathability, and durability. Here’s a look at the modern, high-performance sheets we carry:
Soft Washed Microfiber Sheets: These sheets are known for their incredible, velvety softness and durability. The quality of microfiber is measured in GSM (grams per square meter), not thread count. A higher GSM means a denser, softer, and more durable fabric that’s also wrinkle-resistant and easy to care for.
Soft Bamboo Sheets: Celebrated for their silky, luxurious feel, bamboo sheets are a game-changer for hot sleepers. The quality comes from the long, smooth, and round fibers of the bamboo plant itself, which create an exceptionally smooth fabric that is naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and hypoallergenic.
Performance Jersey Sheets: Think of your favorite high-performance t-shirt—that's the concept here. Made from a blend of Nylon and Spandex, these sheets are knitted, not woven, so thread count is irrelevant. They offer incredible four-way stretch that moves with you, exceptional breathability, and a cool-to-the-touch feel, making them perfect for any sleep position.
What's the difference between Microfiber and Bamboo sheets?
Both microfiber and bamboo sheets are fantastic modern options that feel amazing, but they offer distinct benefits depending on what you're looking for in your sleep experience. Here’s a breakdown:
Microfiber Sheets
Think of a velvety, peachy-soft feel. Our microfiber sheets are made from extremely fine polyester fibers, which makes them exceptionally cozy and smooth.
You'll love them if you prioritize:
Incredible Softness & Value: They offer a wonderfully soft feel at a very accessible price point.
Easy Care & Durability: They are strong, machine washable, and highly resistant to wrinkles, so they look great right out of the dryer with minimal fuss.
Cozy Comfort: They provide a comfortable warmth, making them a great year-round option, especially for those who don't sleep overly hot.
Best for: Sleepers looking for maximum softness, durability, and easy care on a budget.
Bamboo Sheets
Imagine a silky-smooth, almost fluid drape that feels incredibly luxurious and cool against your skin. Our bamboo sheets are made from viscose derived from bamboo, a material celebrated for its sleep-enhancing properties.
You'll love them if you prioritize:
Temperature Regulation: This is their superpower. Bamboo fabric is exceptionally breathable and wicks moisture away from your body, making it feel noticeably cooler to the touch. It's a game-changer for anyone who sleeps hot, especially during our warm Oklahoma summers.
Silky, Luxurious Feel: They have a smooth, premium texture that rivals high-end hotel sheets.
Hypoallergenic Properties: Bamboo is naturally gentle and a great choice for those with sensitive skin.
Best for: Hot sleepers, anyone with sensitive skin, or those looking to invest in a truly luxurious, resort-like feel.
Can I wash my memory-foam pillow?
Wash the removable cover as directed; do not machine-wash the foam core—spot clean and air-dry.
Can I bleach my mattress protector?
No—avoid bleach/fabric softeners; machine-wash per label and tumble dry low unless your model specifies hot-wash/dry (some cooling 5-sided protectors allow it).
Do I need special sheets for an adjustable bed?
That's a great question, and the answer depends on the type of adjustable bed you have. Here’s a simple guide.
For a Standard Adjustable Bed, where the entire mattress moves as one piece, your regular fitted sheets will likely work just fine. We recommend using high-quality fitted sheets with deep pockets and a strong elastic band all the way around. This helps the corners stay securely in place as the head and foot of the bed move. Sheets with some natural stretch, like our Bamboo or Performance Jersey sets, also work exceptionally well.
For a Split King Adjustable Bed, you must use a special Split King sheet set. A Split King setup consists of two Twin XL mattresses side-by-side, and the sheet set is designed specifically for this. It includes one King size flat sheet, two separate Twin XL fitted sheets, and two King size pillowcases. You can find our selection of Split King sheet sets right here on our bedding page.
For a Split Head or Flex Head Adjustable Bed, you also need a special sheet set designed for a "Split Head." These sheets have a unique construction that is split only partway down the middle. This allows the head of each side to be raised independently while the bottom half of the sheet remains a single, intact piece.
Will this mattress protector sleep hot?
Not at all! That's a very common concern, and we've specifically chosen our mattress protectors to be highly breathable to ensure they don't trap heat.
Our standard waterproof protectors work much like high-tech athletic apparel. They use a smart, breathable membrane that completely blocks liquids like spills or sweat from reaching your mattress, but allows air and body heat to flow freely outwards. This gives you 100% waterproof protection without the hot, sticky feeling of old-fashioned plastic or vinyl covers.
For those who tend to sleep extra hot, we also have an even better option. Our FRIO 5-Sided Premium Cooling Mattress Protector features the same breathable waterproof barrier, but its fabric is also woven with special cooling fibers that actively pull heat away from your body. This creates a noticeably cooler sleep surface, perfect for keeping you comfortable during those warm Oklahoma nights.
Whether you choose our standard protector or the premium FRIO, you can rest assured you’ll be sleeping cool and comfortable.
